Spring Cleaning Checklist: Room-by-Room Guide

Before You Start: Whole-House Tasks

These tasks apply to every room and are most efficient done as a sweep through the whole house:

• Replace or clean HVAC air filters (every 1–3 months; spring is a must)
• Check and replace batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors
• Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures in all rooms (do this first — dust falls down)
• Vacuum or wash all air vents and return registers
• Wipe all light switches and door handles throughout the home

🍳 Kitchen

The kitchen is the most labor-intensive room in spring cleaning. Budget 3–4 hours for a thorough job.

Appliances

• Clean the oven — run self-cleaning cycle or use oven cleaner; clean racks separately in the sink
• Clean the microwave — heat a bowl of water with lemon juice for 3 minutes, then wipe down loosened grime
• Run dishwasher empty with a cup of vinegar on the top rack to deodorize and descale
• Clean the range hood and filter — soak metal filters in hot soapy water with degreaser
• Descale the coffee maker with vinegar-water cycle
• Clean the toaster crumb tray and exterior

Cabinets and Pantry

• Pull everything out of the pantry — discard expired items, wipe shelves, reorganize
• Wipe cabinet fronts and handles with all-purpose cleaner
• Clean inside cabinets — remove shelf liners, wipe, replace
• Wipe the tops of upper cabinets (grease and dust accumulate heavily here)

Surfaces and Sink

• Deep clean countertops — move everything off, clean underneath, reseal stone if applicable
• Scrub the sink and garbage disposal — baking soda + vinegar, then ice cubes with salt through the disposal
• Clean and organize under the sink
• Scrub grout lines on backsplash and floor tile
• Mop the floor — move the trash can, move the mat, clean underneath everything

🛁 Bathrooms

• Scrub tile grout with a grout cleaner or baking soda paste — let it sit 15 minutes before scrubbing
• Descale showerheads — soak in vinegar overnight (tie a bag of vinegar around it)
• Clean exhaust fan cover (remove, soak, and dry)
• Wash shower curtain and liner — most fabric curtains and plastic liners are machine washable
• Clean inside medicine cabinet — discard expired medications, wipe shelves
• Clean behind and around the toilet — including the base and floor bolts
• Replace old toothbrushes, loofahs, and bath sponges (breeding grounds for bacteria)
• Wash all bath mats and towels in hot water
• Clean mirrors streak-free
• Organize under-sink storage — discard old products, wipe shelves

🛏️ Bedrooms

• Wash all bedding — sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, mattress pad, and pillow protectors
• Flip or rotate your mattress
• Vacuum the mattress surface (reduces dust mites and allergens)
• Dust and wipe all furniture surfaces — nightstands, dressers, headboard
• Clean under the bed — vacuum, retrieve rogue items, dust bunnies
• Declutter closets — donate clothes not worn in 12+ months, reorganize by season
• Vacuum closet floors and wipe shelves
• Dust baseboards and crown molding
• Vacuum carpet thoroughly or mop hard floors including under furniture
• Wash pillows (most are machine washable — check care labels)

🛋️ Living Room / Family Room

• Vacuum upholstered furniture — cushions, under cushions, crevices
• Spot-clean fabric stains or consider professional upholstery cleaning
• Dust and polish wood furniture
• Clean electronics — TV screen (dry microfiber only), remotes, gaming consoles
• Dust shelves, bookcases, and decorative items — remove everything, dust surface, replace
• Clean lampshades (vacuum with brush attachment or lint roller)
• Vacuum or professionally clean carpets and rugs
• Clean fireplace — remove ash, wipe glass door, check damper
• Organize entertainment center cables and media
• Dust and wipe all baseboards

🧺 Laundry Room

• Clean the washing machine — run an empty hot cycle with 2 cups vinegar or a washing machine cleaner tablet
• Clean the dryer lint trap and vent — lint buildup is a fire hazard. Remove the lint trap, vacuum the slot, and clean the exterior vent
• Wipe down the exterior of both machines
• Clean the rubber gasket seal on front-load washers (mold accumulates here)
• Organize supplies — discard old or expired products
• Mop the floor and wipe shelves

🏡 Entryway, Garage, and Outdoor

• Power wash or scrub the front porch, walkway, and driveway
• Clean the front door — both sides, hardware, and glass
• Wash outdoor furniture and cushion covers
• Clean outdoor light fixtures
• Sweep and organize the garage — donate, discard, and reorganize
• Clean exterior windows
• Wash exterior house siding or stucco if accessible
• Clear and clean gutters if accessible and safe

Spring Cleaning Schedule (Suggested)

Spread it out over 2–3 weekends to avoid burnout:

• Weekend 1: Whole-house tasks (air filters, vents, ceiling fans, windows) + Kitchen
• Weekend 2: Bathrooms + Bedrooms
• Weekend 3: Living areas + Laundry room + Outdoor/Garage
