Post-Renovation Cleaning Checklist: Getting Your Home Back
Updated March 28, 2026 โข 8 min read โข By National Cleaner Connect
Important: Post-construction dust settles for 3โ5 days after work stops. Professional cleaners use a three-pass approach โ rough clean, detail clean, then touch-up โ for this reason.
You survived the renovation. The contractor is gone. But your home is coated in fine construction dust that regular cleaning won't touch. Drywall dust, sawdust, and concrete particles are much finer and more pervasive than household dust. They infiltrate HVAC systems, closed cabinets, and fabric. Here's the professional approach.
Pass 1: Rough Clean (Day 1)
- Remove all construction debris, leftover materials, and protective coverings
- Sweep and shop-vac all hard surfaces (residential vacuums may clog)
- Wipe down all surfaces to remove bulk dust with damp cloths
- Clean windows of paint splatters and tape residue using razor scrapers
- Remove any protective film from new appliances, fixtures, and countertops
Pass 2: Detail Clean (24โ48 Hours Later)
- HEPA vacuum all surfaces including walls, ceilings, shelves, and inside cabinets
- Wipe all surfaces with damp microfiber cloths (not dry dusting โ it redistributes dust)
- Clean all light fixtures, outlet covers, switch plates, and vents
- Clean inside all cabinets, drawers, and closets โ even those away from construction
- Scrub and sanitize bathrooms and kitchen thoroughly
- Clean all glass, mirrors, and reflective surfaces
- Mop hard floors 2โ3 times (first pass picks up dust; second pass actually cleans)
- Vacuum upholstered furniture and curtains with HEPA attachment
Pass 3: Touch-Up (3โ5 Days Later)
Fine dust continues settling from the air for days after construction stops. A final pass catches residual:
- Re-dust all horizontal surfaces
- Re-vacuum all floors with HEPA
- Final floor clean/mop
- Replace ALL HVAC filters (critical โ construction dust clogs filters extremely fast)
- Run HVAC system for several hours, then check filters again
Hidden Areas Most People Miss
- HVAC ducts: Construction dust enters ductwork and recirculates. Consider professional duct cleaning ($300โ$500)
- Inside appliances: Dishwashers, ovens, refrigerators โ dust infiltrates even with doors closed
- Behind appliances: Behind fridge, washer, dryer
- Closet shelves and rods: Even rooms far from construction
- Window tracks and sills: Trap fine dust invisible until wiped
- Ceiling fan blades: Collect thick layers
- Tops of door frames and crown molding: Horizontal ledges collect everything
Post-Renovation Cleaning Costs
Professional post-construction cleaning typically costs $0.15โ$0.50 per square foot, or $300โ$800 for a 1,500โ2,500 sq ft home. This is 2โ3x the cost of a regular deep clean. Many contractors include a rough clean in their contract, but the detail clean is usually your responsibility.
DIY vs. Professional Post-Renovation Cleaning
You can handle Pass 1 (rough clean) yourself. For Pass 2 and 3, professionals are strongly recommended because they have HEPA-rated equipment, commercial-grade tools, and experience with construction dust that regular vacuums and cloths can't adequately address.
