Carpet vs. Hardwood Floors:
Cleaning and Care Guide

Routine maintenance, stain treatment, and professional cleaning schedules for both floor types.

Carpet and hardwood are the two most common residential flooring types โ€” and they require completely different care approaches. The debate over which is "easier to clean" misses the point: they are easy in different ways, and failing to use the right method for either can cause premature wear or permanent damage.

Carpet: Routine Cleaning and Maintenance

Vacuuming

Vacuuming is the most important maintenance task for carpet โ€” and most people do not do it frequently enough. Soil particles work their way into carpet fibers and act like sandpaper, cutting fibers and permanently dulling the carpet. The rule of thumb: vacuum high-traffic areas twice a week, lower-traffic areas weekly.

Vacuuming tips that actually matter:

Spot Cleaning Carpet Stains

The golden rule: blot, never rub. Rubbing spreads the stain and drives it deeper into the fibers. Always blot from the outside of the stain inward to prevent spreading.

Water-Based Stains

(coffee, juice, mud) โ€” Blot up excess. Apply cold water and blot. Use dish soap solution if needed. Rinse with cold water, blot dry.

Oil/Grease Stains

Apply baking soda or cornstarch to absorb grease. Wait 15 minutes, vacuum up. Then apply dish soap solution, blot, and rinse.

Pet Stains/Odors

Blot immediately. Apply enzymatic cleaner (not regular soap โ€” enzymes break down organic matter). Let sit per product instructions, then blot and dry.

Red Wine/Dark Drinks

Blot immediately. Apply club soda or cold water. Blot. Apply dish soap, blot, rinse. For set stains, use hydrogen peroxide (test in hidden area first).

Professional Carpet Cleaning Schedule

The IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) recommends professional cleaning every 12-18 months for most homes. Increase frequency for:

Hardwood Floors: Routine Cleaning and Maintenance

Daily and Weekly Care

Hardwood's enemy is grit and moisture. Sand, dirt, and grit act as sandpaper on the finish. Moisture warps and damages the wood itself.

What Not to Do With Hardwood

Hardwood Stain Removal

Act immediately โ€” hardwood is less forgiving than carpet for liquids. Blot up any spill right away. For residue, use a hardwood cleaner on a damp cloth and wipe with the grain. For sticky residue, a small amount of mineral spirits on a cloth works well โ€” follow with a hardwood cleaner rinse.
